Moldova becomes ECOSOC member
Moldova has been elected as a member state of the United Nations’ Economic and Social council for a three-year term beginning 1 January 2008. During three years Moldova will have the opportunity to contribute in examining and solving the economic, social and humanitarian issues included on UN’s agenda.
President Vladimir Voronin was reported by the presidential press service as saying that while gaining ECOSOC membership can be considered as a big achievement for Moldova, the authorities must make significant efforts to fully capitalise the opportunities deriving from this status.
Vladimir Voronin has ordered the formulation of an action plan that will include Moldova’s objectives within ECOSOC during these three years. An interministerial task force headed by Andrei Stratan, Deputy Premier and concurrently Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, was mandated to coordinate and monitor the activities of the Moldovan delegations within the Council and its subsidiary bodies to which the country is party to.
The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations assists the General Assembly in promoting international economic and social cooperation and development. ECOSOC has 54 members, all of whom are elected by the General Assembly for a three-year term.
