Moldova 1 and Publika warned by BCC

The Broadcasting Coordination Council (BCC) Wednesday warned the public TV channel Moldova 1 and private channel Publika TV over broadcasting on September 5 programs where the voters were urged to take part in the constitutional referendum, Info-Prim Neo reports. The challenges were submitted by the Communists Party and the Social Democratic Party. They said the two channels broke the Election Code as electoral propaganda during 48 hours before the referendum is banned. They argued the urging of the people to vote in the plebiscite was a violation of the rights of the referendum campaign participants that were boycotting the ballot question. Moldova 1 director Angela Sarbu has said the BCC's decision is exaggerated and not in accordance with the law as the public broadcaster's mission is to disseminate educative and motivational information. Publika TV director general Dumitru Tara said he will dispute this decision. He said the procedural norms were violated as the channel was informed about the challenge on September 14 in the evening. Moreover, the slogans broadcast by Publika TV – “Vote as You Think” and “You Still Have Time to Vote” - do not violate the rights of the referendum campaign participants, Dumitru Tara added.
