The mixed-member electoral system could create two-partism in Moldova’s Parliament. This way the small, pro-European parties could be marginalized and could obtain only 20-25 seats, political expert Ion Tabarta said in the program “People’s Council” on 10TV channel, IPN reports.

According to the expert, the Socialists will win on the political left and the Democratic Party will win on the right. “By the old electoral system, the pro-European parties could have gained about 40-45 seats, while in a particular context the Democratic Party wouldn’t have entered Parliament, even if this was highly improbable,” stated Ion Tabarta.

According to him, the pro-European parties have chances in the next elections, but should not run by themselves, but in a common bloc and should field a common candidate in each single-mandate constituency. These parties’ chances to get a good result in elections would thus increase.

Ion Tabarta noted that to annul the law that introduces the mixed-member electoral system, some of the MPs could challenge the act in the Constitutional Court because there are suspicions that some of its provisions run counter to the supreme law of the state.
