Ministry of Justice proposes releasing seriously ill inmates
The Ministry of Justice has proposed releasing early all the seriously ill inmates, regardless of the time when they got ill. Amendments to this effect were approved by the Parliamentary Legal Commission, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The Ministry wants to replace the provision that prisoners who got ill after their were sentenced can be released early with a new one, according to which seriously ill inmates can be released early regardless if they got ill before or after the sentence.
Deputy Minister of Justice Vladimir Grosu told the Commission members that there were cases when the sentenced were ill before committing the crime and their situation worsened in jail. “We have a bed-ridden prisoner who cannot be released because there is no such provision in the law”, he explained. Vladimir Grosu said that such situations can be labeled as inhumane treatment and torture. He added that if these amendments were adopted by Parliament, they would have retroactive effect.
The Commission approved the bill on one condition: released prisoners would have to respect a strict set of rules once free.
