Ministry of Justice denies sabotage in the case of Ilan Shor's extradition from Israel

The Ministry of Justice rejects the accusations regarding the alleged delay in the procedure of requesting the extradition of Ilan Shor and gives assurances that all necessary actions have been taken, according to the legal competences and within the established deadlines, in the interest of the state. The Justice Ministry's comment comes in the wake of the statement by the head of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, Veronica Dragalin, that the Justice Ministry sabotaged the procedure for the extradition of Ilan Shor from Israel, IPN reports.

"The ministry appreciates the efforts of law institutions in ensuring transparency, but emphasizes that any public communication must be objective and based on official documents," the ministry's commentary reads.

The Ministry of Justice specifies that on February 14, 2020, the Ministry of Justice forwarded the official extradition request to the Israeli authorities, after the confirmation of Ilan Shor's entry into the territory of Israel, and in August 2021, the Ministry of Justice responded to the Israeli side's requests, providing the necessary additional information and documents.

Between November 2021 and November 2022, two additional requests were sent to Israel regarding the status of the extradition request. On April 19, 2023, after the final decision of the Chisinau Court of Appeal on the conviction of Ilan Shor, the Ministry of Justice informed the Israeli authorities and requested to expedite the procedure.

On July 3, 2023, upon receipt of the reasoned decision of the Court of Appeal, the Ministry of Justice ensured the translation of the act into English. The decision was officially forwarded to the Israeli authorities and the initial extradition request was updated and supplemented with new circumstances, including recommendations received from the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office. In December 2023, the Ministry of Justice sent a further request to the Israeli authorities in order to clarify the status of the request.

Subsequently, the Ministry of Justice was informed about Ilan Shor's entry into the territory of the Russian Federation. Thus, on February 16, 2024, the official extradition request was sent to the General Prosecutor's Office of the Russian Federation. At the same time, the Ministry of Justice expressed its readiness to provide any additional documents necessary to facilitate the extradition process.

The head of the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office, Veronica Dragalin, said in a TV program that the Ministry of Justice is sabotaging the extradition procedure of fugitive oligarch Ilan Shor. She said that she had prepared the request according to the European Commission's form and would have agreed it with the Israeli prosecutors, but the Ministry of Justice allegedly refused to send this version.

According to the law, the Ministry of Justice is responsible for the extradition procedure.
