Mihail Druță: We got rid of full energy dependency on Russia

The Republic of Moldova got rid of the complete energy dependency on the Russian Federation, diversified its energy sources and considerably increased its exports to the EU market, PAS MP Mihail Druță stated in a public debate staged by IPN. According to the parliamentarian, the PAS government managed to maintain a decent standard of living for the citizens amidst the unprecedented energy and inflationary crises generated by Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.

Mihail Druță noted that Moldova’s economy suffers a lot because of the war in Ukraine, which also influences the people’s quality of life. Moldova managed to cope with multiple crises generated by the war thanks to the foreign partners’ support.

“Surely, the war influences our socioeconomic situation. The war erected a wall between Europe and the Slavic world, most of the CIS states. And only our little Moldova is near the wall eastwards. The shipping of a fruit truck from Moldova to Russia before the war cost US$2,000. After the outbreak of the war, due to multiple causes, the cost of the same truck amounts to US$12,000. This influences the economic and social situation in the country. We would have collapsed as a state formation without the solidarity support of the European Union. Let’s remember the platform created at Romania’s initiative, with the participation of France and Germany, which saved us in critical moments, helped us procure energy resources and keep the economic life afloat,” said the PAS MP.

He noted that during the three years, the government managed to diversify energy sources, ensuring the country’s energy independence. Also, thanks to the efforts made by the state institutions, the galloping rise in prices was stopped, the inflation rate being reduced to 4.5%.

“We have achieved incredible things over the last 30 years. We got rid of the full dependency on Russian energy resources, gained rescuing energy independence, managed to diversify the electricity supply sources, succeeded in connecting our system to the European electricity system. We have maintained a decent standard of living for the citizens. In 2021, the inflation started to follow an upward trend and reached 34%, but this inflation was lowered due to the measures taken by the National Bank and the government, in cooperation and consultation with European institutions. Now inflation is at 4.5%, which is lower than the inflation rate in the countries of the region. 65% of Moldova’s exports now go to European Union countries. This means security and stability,” said the representative of the PAS government.

The MP admitted that the justice sector reform gives many headaches to society, but noted that the government managed to launch the process of cleaning up the system by instituting the extraordinary assessment of judges and prosecutors.

“The period for the justice sector reform is not over. It is an ongoing process. It cannot be hurried from a technical point of view, from the angle of legal procedures. Albania tried to speed up this process and their justice system collapsed. They had no court or prosecutor’s office functioning. In our country, the current state of affairs doesn’t allow us to say that nothing was done. Something has been done and a foreign referee should say how much has been done,” stated Mihail Druță.

The public debate entitled “What traces “two years of decisive steps on the European path” have left” was the 301th installment of IPN’s project “Developing Political Culture through Public Debates” which is supported by the Hanns Seidel Foundation.
