The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration is “deeply concerned” by the repeated attacks over the past few days at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in Ukraine.
“Turning Europe’s largest nuclear power plant into a theater of war poses risks of catastrophic radiation leaks. The Russian troops must withdraw and allow immediate access to experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency”, Minister Nicu Popescu wrote on Twitter.
According to Ukrainian military intelligence, Russian artillery fire hit a pumping unit in the plant’s underground cooling system. Another hit partially damaged a fire station responsible for the safety of the nuclear plant.
Energoatom, the Ukrainian company that oversees nuclear power generation, said the Zaporizhzhia plant is operating at a risk of exceeding fire and radiation safety standards.
