MEP Maria Petre: Recent events in Moldova involve serious violations of fundamental human rights

Romanian Member of European Parliament Maria Petre demands the organization of an extraordinary meeting of the delegation to the EU-Moldova Parliamentary Cooperation Committee, where the Moldovan government ought to give explanations about the recent abusive actions, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a press release from the Europarliamentarian. The petition of the MEP comes in reaction to two recent events: the actions led by the political powers of the Republic of Moldova against young students that freely express their opinion on the Internet forums and on the information portals, and the abusive attitude of the government when dealing with the protests organized last week by a NGO aimed to protect the rights of pensioners and called, symbolically, "Salvgardare" (Safeguard). Maria Petre suggests the members of the delegation should initiate a new joint motion for a resolution concerning the violation of fundamental human rights in the Republic of Moldova, that should be debated and adopted during the July 2008 session of the European Parliament. “Both cases involve serious violations of fundamental human rights, the right to free expression and action, symbolic if we take into account those who are attacked: the youngest and the oldest”, said Maria Petre. According to her,it is difficult to accept that the government and its police forces arrest and prosecute young students, especially when President Voronin declares that "freedom of press and speech represents a national ambition". The day after this statement, the Prosecution confiscated the personal computers of the students who published critical comments of the government. Concerning the actions organized by the NGO "Salvgardare", the images of beaten old people, laying on the stairs of the Moldavian government, with bleeding faces and pushed by the police forces, are absolutely shocking and difficult to comment on. In the opinion of Iacob Gumenita, the chief of the police forces, " we only protected the Government from the unchained violent rage of the old people" The petition is addressed to Marianne Mikko, Chairwoman of the delegation to the EU-Moldova Parliamentary Cooperation Committee, to the members of the delegation to the EU-Moldova Parliamentary Cooperation Committee, and to the Romanian delegation in the European Parliament.
