Medical assistant convicted of malpractice

A woman medical assistant was found guilty of the death of a child through violation of the rules of providing medical assistance. It happened in Stefan Voda district. The woman went to the child’s home with delay and didn’t inform the family doctor about his state of health, IPN reports.

The prosecutors established that in the morning of January 31, 2014, a local woman phoned the family doctor’s office in Rascaieti village and informed that her two-month old daughter had fever. In breach of the legal provisions, the nurse didn’t include the call in the register and went to the family’s domicile only in four hours, when the girl’s state worsened.

In the evening of the same day, the woman called again the medical assistant, who injected 0.7 ml of Dexamethasone to the child. In several minutes, the girl died.

The medical-legal examination showed that the girl’s death was caused by respiratory failure conditioned by interstitial pneumonia. Medical assistance was provided with delay. According to the presented medical documents, the medical assistant insufficiently assessed the child’s general state of health and didn’t inform the family doctor, even is such a measure is mandatory in such cases.

The medical assistant was put on probation for a period of one year, but wasn’t banned from working in the medical system. The prosecutors intend to challenge the decision of the Stefan Voda Court and to demand that the medical assistant be banned from practicing medicine.
