Mayoral runoffs to be held Nov. 19

A mayoral runoff vote will take place in 273 localities of Moldova on November 19, according to the Central Election Commission (CEC). In these localities, in the first round of the November 5 general local elections, none of the candidates for mayor garnered more than half of the valid votes cast by electors, IPN reports.

The two candidates who polled most of the votes are written on the ballot in descending order, depending on the votes obtained in the first round of voting. Voting in the runoffs will be held based on the registers of voters used in the first round and in accordance with the CEC’s decision on the special conditions for voting in the general local elections of November 5.

Also on November 19, the elections in eight localities will be rerun. Elections will be held to elect the mayor and the local council in Cunicea and Nicolaevca villages of Florești district, Sămănanca village of Orhei district, Aluatu and Salcia villages of Taraclia district, Chioselia Rusă, Chirsova and Cotovscoe villages of the ATU Gagauzia.

The Central Election Commission ascertained that the turnout of voters in these localities was under ¼ of the voting-eligible population and the elections couldn’t be validated therefore. The rerun elections will be held based on the same voter rolls and the same electoral councils and offices.
