Marian Lupu says constitutional referendum might take place simultaneously with local elections

Moldova’s Acting President Marian Lupu said discussions may take place to consider holding a constitutional referendum on the day of the local elections to ask the people if they agree that the head of state should be elected by a simple majority of votes, Info-Prim Neo reports. “It is a new situation that is not very clear. After the PCRM withdrew its constitutional amendment proposal, a number of ministers made many related statements,” Marian Lupu told the press. He said that he expects experts of the Parliament to pronounce on the legality of the PCRM’s move. Things will become clearer after the Constitutional Court rules when the presidential elections should take place, he stated. Marian Lupu believes that the PCRM tries to destabilize the political situation in the country and is playing a tactical game that is convenient for the parliamentary Opposition. In a TV program on Wednesday evening, the president of honor of the PDM Dumitru Diacov said the idea of holding a constitutional referendum simultaneously with the local elections, so that the people decide if they want the President to be elected in Parliament by 51 votes, may be implemented. The same day, the PCRM announced that it decided to withdraw its proposal on the amendment of Article 78 of the Constitution and that it insists on the election of an apolitical head of state by the vote of all the lawmakers. Under the law, the head of state is elected by 61 votes. The ruling alliance needs two more votes.
