The situation at Banca de Economii (BEM) is serious and the administrator of the BEM, which is the Government of Moldova, should swiftly provide solutions for remedying the situation, Head of Parliament Marian Lupu said after a meeting centering on the state of the bank, Info-Prim Neo reports. “Even if the Government is the administrator, the legislative body should also be involved. First of all, we should identity the persons who caused such a state and establish the reasons. Secondly, we must support the solutions that will be proposed by the administrator of the bank so that the problem is solved. I consider that the problem should be fixed immediately as there is not much time available. There should be taken definite steps that will be transformed into bills presented to Parliament,” said Marian Lupu. He also said that a commission of inquiry should be constituted in the first sitting of Parliament to examine the situation at the BEM. The Government must present its solutions in Parliament so as to identify the source from where money will be taken to remedy the situation. “The country’s legislature must adopt proposals, but the proposals must be formulated by the executive. The state will have to provide a rather large injection to the BEM. We must make sure that the money will have a positive effect. Maybe a foreign investor wants to buy all the noxious assets without becoming shareholder. An investment of 700 million lei is needed. If no investor comes, the state budget will be the main source of financing,” said the Speaker. Marian Lupu stressed that the problem of overdue loans appeared in the autumn of 2010, period that coincides with the electoral struggle. He proposed that the Council of the Alliance for European Integration should be convened to discuss the situation at the BEM in detail, but he received yet no answer from his colleagues.
