The Republic of Moldova enjoys accomplishments in the promotion of women’s rights as of 1995, when the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action were adopted at the fourth World Conference on Women, the document being considered the most progressive roadmap for the empowerment of women and girls everywhere. Before the International Women’s Day, a number of activists came with encouragement messages in support of gender equality, IPN reports.

“March 8 is not only a holiday. It also symbolizes the women’s struggle for a safe space where we, the women of the 21st century, would live, the struggle for the legislation that protects the woman, her bodily integrity, psychological integrity, right to work and other rights. We must remember what happened 100 years ago, 200 years ago, how the women lived then and how painful the transition process to what we have today was,” lawyer and civic activist Tatiana Chebac stated in the launch of a campaign entitled “I’m the Equality Generation: Dialogue between Generations”.

Beyond the progress made by Moldova in realizing women’s rights, the pace is very slow and an efficient dialogue between generations could contribute to accelerating the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in this field, said UN Resident Coordinator in Moldova Simon Springett, noting that gender inequality is the biggest injustice in our period and the biggest danger to human rights.

Elena Bacalu, chairwoman of the commission on social protection, health and family, said many things should be modified. “I was thinking why the women should obtain the right to be more in Parliament, namely by a bill – because the women really showed that they can do many things, many necessary things for society,” stated the MP.  

The campaign “I’m the Equality Generation: Dialogue between Generations” targets both woman and men, especially young people from rural and urban areas. It involves female and male human rights experts and defenders of women’s rights.
