A man from Ștefan Vodă district was given a jail term of six years and fined 85,000 lei for blackmail. The sentence was pronounced by the Buiucani Court of Chisinau City, IPN reports, with reference to the Chisinau Prosecutor's Office.

In July, the defendant blackmailed his ex-girlfriend, threatening to publish intimate images of her if she did not give him €1,000. The man resorted to intimidation and threats of physical retaliation and with a weapon, then threatened to kill not only her, but also her family, including the victim's minor daughter. On August 30, the defendant received 20,000 lei from his ex-girlfriend. Then, the police caught him in the act and seized the money.

The man admitted his guilt and the case was examined according to a simplified procedure. The sentence is not final and can be appealed. The Prosecutor's Office encourages victims to report such acts in order to help identify and punish the people who resort to blackmail.
