A man has been brought to trial for illegally financing the "Sansa" party. Prosecutors accuse him of distributing over 1.4 million lei to subordinate activists to support illegal political activities, IPN reports.
The investigation found that the money was used to promote the party’s image, support a candidate, organize meetings, and distribute electoral materials, without declaring or accounting for the funds as required by law. These activities took place between November 2023 and March 2024, until the suspect was detained.
Prosecutors claim that the illegal financing activities were carried out through a complex scheme allegedly involving fugitive convict Ilan Shor. The accused has denied the charges, and the case will be examined by the Chisinau Court, Buiucani branch.
Authorities state that this criminal case was separated from a larger investigation initiated in August 2023, targeting a wider group of individuals suspected of illegally financing the "Sansa" party, the successor of the former "Shor" party, which was declared unconstitutional in 2023 and removed from the State Register of Legal Entities in 2024.
Under Moldovan law, such offenses are punishable by a fine of 42,500 to 67,500 lei or a prison sentence of three to six years.
In February 2024, the Central Electoral Commission reported serious financial irregularities and requested the Ministry of Justice to dissolve the "Sansa" Political Party. A final decision has not yet been made.
