A man aged 41 was put on probation because in November 2021 he tried to illegally take over 220,000 cigarettes out of the country. The Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases said that the man partially admitted his guilt and cooperated with the investigation authority. Consequently, the court imposed a milder punishment on the man, giving him a four-year suspended sentence, IPN reports.
Since November 2021 until May 2022, the man had been in remand detention.
The contraband that consisted of seven types of cigarette brands was confiscated for the state’s benefit. The judge also ordered to collect the equivalent value of the truck and trailer used to commit the offense - over 620,000 lei.
The cigarettes were to be sold on the black market in the European Union, mainly in Romania. These were assessed at over half a million lei.
