The Party “Action and Solidarity” (PAS) welcomes civil society’s initiative to organize a legislative referendum to annul the mixed-member electoral system, but will not become involved in the related activities because it does not want to politicize this initiative, PAS leader Maia Sandu stated in the program “Important” on TVC21 channel, IPN reports.

“The PAS welcomes this initiative. If it became involved, it would mean politicizing the initiative. This is namely what the government wants to be able to try and make this initiative an object of ridicule, to transpose it to the field of political struggles, especially geopolitical ones, as it already tried to do,” said the PAS leader.

Maia Sandu noted she is glad that the civil society organizations have a more powerful voice. “This is a voice that comes not from among political parties, but from among people who have political influence. We think this initiative should not be politicized, as some of the media outlets and political parties tried to do. It is the initiative of civil society and I think it should remain so,” stated the politician.

A number of civil society organizations suggested initiating and holding, before the 2018 parliamentary elections, a national legislative referendum on the annulment of the law by which the mixed-member electoral system was introduced.
