Maia Sandu on International Day of Forests: Let's protect the environment!

On the International Day of Forests, President Maia Sandu called on the citizens to protect the environment. "I urge you to love and take care of our home Moldova not only today, on the Day of Forests, or tomorrow, when it is World Water Day, but every day," the head of state said, quoted by IPN.

Maia Sandu noted that the effects of climate change, droughts and extreme weather phenomena are increasingly felt. They endanger the environment, the agriculture that feeds, the springs from which people drink water. In order to protect agriculture and make the land resistant to challenges, more forests are needed, which is why Moldova's afforestation is a national priority.

In the first two years since the launch of the afforestation program, forests have been planted and rehabilitated on an area of over 15,0000 hectares. This year, the authorities aim to expand this area by 7,000 hectares.

In November 2023, the Ministry of Environment and “Moldsilva” Agency, under the aegis of President Maia Sandu, launched the National Afforestation Program that provides for the rehabilitation and creation of new forests on an area of 145,000 hectares over 10 years (2023-2032).

On December 21, 2012, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution saying that March 21 of each year will be observed as the International Day of Forests.
