Even if thousands of kilometers separate us, Moldova and Portugal have come closer to each other. By strengthening the ties between our states, we aim to promote a common vision for a more stable, safer and prosperous European continent, said President Maia Sandu. The official noted that the wine industry is a relevant example of the close economic ties between Moldova and Portugal. “As regards our economic relations, we would like to see more Portuguese firms extending their operations in our country. This will stimulate economic growth in both of the countries,” President Sandu said in in a joint news conference held together with the President of Portal Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who is paying a visit to Moldova, IPN reports.
Maia Sandu noted that in the opening of the Moldovan-Portuguese forum on October 31, they will consider the possibility of developing businesses in Moldova with representatives of Portuguese companies that are present in the region. “Moldova seeks to diversity further the sources of energy and we want to learn from the Portuguese experience in the renewable energy sector. We would like to see more Portuguese renewable energy companies investing in Moldova,” said President Sandu.
Maia Sandu also said that Moldova’s close relationship with the EU and the preparations for accession negotiations started already to produce important changes in the country. The European Union supports Moldova’s efforts to diversify the sources of energy to increase energy security. “We appreciate the partners’ assistance in strengthening our security. A democratic, strong and stable Moldova can be a reliable partner in ensuring security on the western flank of the European Union,” stated the Moldovan official.
“Thousands and thousands of Moldovans have lived in Portugal for 30 years. They represent an example of contribution to our economy, our equity, our social justice. We are very and very grateful for this as this type of friendship between people is even more important than friendship between states or heads of state or government,” stated Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the President of Portugal.
Before the news conference, a ceremony was held to sign letters of intent on cooperation between the Rectors’ Council of the Republic of Moldova and the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. On October 31, there will be signed a memorandum of understanding between the investment agencies of the two states.
