It would have been dramatic if not catastrophic if the Socialists had won the mayoralty of Chisinau, the leader of the Party “Action and Solidarity” (PAS) Maia Sandu stated in the talk show “Emphasis on today” produced by TVR Moldova channel. According to her, Andrei Nastase’s victory will encourage the opposition forces so that they have a much bigger chance of winning in autumn, IPN reports.
“We will have our eye on the mayor and his team as we are residents of Chisinau. We contributed to the victory and are all responsible and will make sure that these commitments are fulfilled,” stated Maia Sandu.
She also said that the party she represents is ready to help Andrei Nastase in the management of the City Hall. “We came with particular requests in this campaign so that Andrei Nastase assumed concrete commitments in education and we will have our eye especially on education and here will try to become involved if not with people on the team, at least by initiatives for the new mayor and will convince him to promote these initiatives,” stated the politician.
Asked why she didn’t run for the mayoralty of Chisinau, Maia Sandu said the PAS chose the unity of the pro-European anti-oligarchic forces because parliamentary elections will take place this year and these are very important. “I have to admit that if we hadn’t had these parliamentary elections, the PAS could have taken another decision. Our decision derived strictly from a concrete context – we have to win a decisive victory this year in the parliamentary elections, which is too important and it was not worth venturing into competitions,” she stated. The politician noted the PAS considered the possibility of fielding a candidate from outside, from civil society, but decided to support the candidacy of Andrei Nastase.
Acceding to Maia Sandu, the votes of the supporters of Valeriu Munteanu and Constantin Codreanu were very important in the runoffs, as were the votes of those who didn’t cast their ballots in the first round of the mayoral elections.
