President Maia Sandu, who is running for a new term in office, voiced hope that the judges of the Constitutional Court (CC) will confirm the result of the October 20 referendum and the European integration objective will be enshrined in the supreme law of the country. The official noted she is sure that the number of citizens supporting the amendment of the Constitution would have been much higher if the voter corruption scheme implemented by the Shor group had not been applied, IPN reports.
President Sandu said that if she wins a new term, she will invite to consultations all the political parties, except those that are financed by the convicted fugitive Ilan Shor, in order to agree a new justice sector reform project. The resistance to change shown by the justice system must be fought with the combined effort of all the political forces.
"Immediately after the election, I intend to invite people from all political parties that have never been financed by Shor to discuss how to reform the justice system so that this is a credible reform and we are not accused of intervening. We need an inclusive discussion, which will allow us to reform the justice system faster and to be more protected in the next parliamentary elections than we are now. In the October 20 election, the theft of votes affected not only me. The theft of votes also affected other candidates. I do not know who my opponent would have been if votes had not been bought. Maybe it would have been Renato Usatyi. All the political parties were affected by this theft of votes. We must sit down together and see how we can protect the independence of the vote," Maia Sandu stated in the program "Secrets of Power" on Jurnal TV channel.
The official expressed her hope that, despite the massive electoral corruption, the Constitutional Court will validate the results of the national constitutional referendum.
The Constitutional Court is to examine the results of the plebiscite and to validate or invalidate them on Thursday, October 31, starting at 10:00 a.m.
"The Constitutional Court will make the decision, but for me it is very clear that the citizens' vote, despite these frauds and despite this disinformation campaign, was obvious. I think that the vote “For” was at least 60%, but there is a documented majority vote. I hope that the Court's decision will confirm the decision of the majority of citizens. This referendum came to confirm the will of the citizens so that the authorities can go ahead with these negotiations and can complete them as soon as possible, in the next few years," said Maia Sandu.
According to Central Election Commission data, in the constitutional referendum of October 20 50.35% of the electors voted in favor of amending the Constitution, and 49.65% voted against.
