Maia Sandu discusses regional security with NATO delegation

President Maia Sandu had a meeting with the delegation of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, which is on a working visit to the Republic of Moldova. The discussions focused on regional challenges, the risks generated by Russia's war against Ukraine and the importance of international cooperation to strengthen regional security, IPN reports.

In the meeting, President Sandu underlined Moldova’s continuous commitment to ensuing regional peace and security, highlighting the need for an open dialogue between the states of the region and international organizations.

The head of state also stressed the importance of strengthening the defense capabilities and building Moldovan society’s resilience in the face of foreign threats.

The impact of the war in Ukraine on the stability of the region was another topic of discussion. Maia Sandu drew attention to the risks generated by foreign interferences, which aim to destabilize the democratic processes in Moldova. She also reiterated the need for a just and lasting peace process in Ukraine, noting that this is essential for the security not only of Moldova, but also of the whole of Europe.

The Republic of Moldova has benefited from NATO's support for over 30 years, through various programs aimed at strengthening national security. These include initiatives to dispose of pesticides and anti-personnel mines, modernize defense capabilities, and strengthen cybersecurity.

According to the authorities, the cooperation with NATO helps Moldova, as in the case of other neutral states, to protect infrastructure and improve the professional training of public sector personnel.
