Maia Sandu: A new impetus is needed to have a modern and well-equipped army

President Maia Sandu, the supreme commander of the armed forces, said the National Army has been an important pillar in the constitution of the Republic of Moldova as an independent state and a guarantor of the country’s territorial integrity. She rendered homage to the National Army veterans and heroes killed in the war for the independence and integrity of the Republic of Moldova. The official noted that during 30 years, the armed forces have undergone a number of reformation and restructuring stages and a new impetus is now needed to have a modern, professional and well-equipped army. The statements were made in a military ceremony held to mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the National Army that is celebrated on September 3, IPN reports.

According to President Sandu, the conscripts and carabineers, contract service members or high-ranking officials should enjoy the conditions needed for efficient service, should have access to continuous training and should be promoted to posts according to merits. The armed forces should be outfitted with modern military equipment and armament. “These are the current priorities. When these objectives are achieved, the National Army will become a force able to respond to security challenges and to meet the expectations of the country and society,” stated Maia Sandu.

She noted that all the security and defense institutions of the state, the legislation, the structure and the personnel units should be analyzed and steps should be taken to make sure that the public funds are used correctly. The institutional exercise carried out as part of the strategic analysis of the national defense and security sector should cover all the management aspects and should provide sufficient reasons for reviewing and adjusting the strategic documents. The funding for the National Army should be thus increased the next few years and appropriate social protection for the service members and their families should be ensured.

President Sandu thanked the whole staff of the National Army for their devotion and service.

Minister of Defense Anatolie Nosatîi said the National Army has been in the service of the country and its citizens during 30 years. From the very beginning, the National Army service members showed they are ready to defend the territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova, even at the cost of their life, as they did in the Nistru battles of 1992. During 30 years, the institution became reliable, being near society in times of natural disasters and the pandemic. The bomb disposal technicians saved hundreds of lives when disposing of explosive devices found on the country’s territory. The citizens can bank on the National Army’s support. The army built a name at international level by taking part in peacekeeping missions under the aegis of the UN, the EU, the OSCE and NATO, becoming this way the guarantor of regional security and stability.

In the event, Peacekeeping Battalion No. 22 was handed over the war flag and its composition was awarded the Order “Faith to the Homeland” of the first class. For professionalism, a number of service members got state awards. The event continued with a parade of National Army personnel.
