The European Action Movement (MAE) firmly expresses its pro-European, Euro-Atlantic position. The statement was made ahead of the NATO Summit in Bucharest, which will be held between April 2 and 4, Info-Prim Neo reports. The European Union and NATO, which now border Moldova, could provide an optimal framework for the development, stability and maximal security, the president of the movement, Anatol Petrencu, told a press conference on Monday. The MAE leadership believes that the NATO Summit will play an important role in the future of the region. Macedonia, Croatia and Albania are ready to join the Alliance, while Ukraine and Georgia, who have already submitted accession requests, are awaiting a positive decision. At the Summit, a strong emphasis must be laced on strengthening the regional security system, which, obviously, will have implications for Moldova, the head of MAE mentioned. The movement regrets that Moldova lags behind Georgia and Ukraine in the direction of European and Euro-Atlantic integration. According to the MAE vice president, MP Ion Neagu, one third of Moldova’s population are in favor of the country’s accession to NATO, while the official political discourse focuses on preserving the pretended neutrality. According to the quoted source, by using pro-European rhetoric, Voronin’s regime wants to maintain Moldova in the Russian Federation’s geopolitical influence, which is contrary to our national interests. Moldova’s accession to NATO would bring security in the South-East of Europe, but also a range of opportunities for Moldova itself, including economic ones. MAE encourages the political parties, the civil society and all the citizens to firmly contribute to Moldova’s integration into the European family and NATO.
