Long lines formed at a number of polling stations established for the voters residing in the Transnistrian region. In Varnița village of Anenii Noi district, the Nistru war veterans and locals tried to block the road that ensures connection with Bender town. Special police troops were dispatched to the scene, IPN reports.

A number of 42 polling stations were established for voters from the Transnistrian region, Bender municipality and some of the localities of Căușeni district. According to the Central Election Commission, over 20,000 Transnistrian voters cast their ballots there by 2:30pm. About 14,000 voters marked their ballots at those polling stations in total in the November 1 elections.

The General Police Inspectorate said that multiple attempts were made to block the free movement of people through the checkpoint. The police have ensured normality and maintained public order.

The CEC issued a press release, condemning the violent actions taking place in Varnița, which involve locals and veterans who try to hamper the electoral process. “We urge calmness and tolerance and warn that any attempt to encroach upon the rights and freedoms of other persons is against the legislation of the Republic of Moldova. The obstruction of the right to vote carries punishment,” runs the press release.
