Lilia Buracovschi: President could be elected in first round

The presidential elections can have unpredictable results, considers TV presenter Lilia Burakovski. She anticipates that incumbent President Igor Dodon can win the elections by the first round. “Even if his rating is now low, the political left in Moldova is rather stable and does not have many candidates and these facts should be taken into account,” the journalist stated in the public debate “Autumn of elections: expectations and challenges in European development context” that was held by IPN News Agency.

“Renato Usatyi and Vladimir Voronin expressed their readiness to run, but I think they already have talks on the left for these candidates not to hamper the main player,” stated Lilia Buracovschi.

She noted that the low voter turnout, which is predictable, will also play a role. “There are harsh election participation conditions, including mask wearing and bringing of pens from home. The voting time is reduced by two hours. These things can diminish the number of voters. A low turnout with many candidates on the right and the supported mobilization of the voters of the left can favor the candidate of the left,” stated the journalist.

“While the representatives of the right will struggle, but not for the idea, but between themselves, Igor Dodon will make effort to win the elections by the first round,” opined Lilia Burakovski.

She said the geopolitical fakes will serve as an efficient instrument for forging the victory. “Why should someone invent the bicycle if they can use tools that proved their efficiency, such as telling how many visits you paid to Moscow, what agreements were reached and that the diesel fuel arrived at the right moment plus using several more electoral finds to underline that even if the President didn’t manage to implement a balanced foreign policy with all the foreign partners, at least the relations with Russia are good,” stated the journalist.

The situation in Belarus is the only foreign influence factor named by the journalist. “Those from the Presidential Palace and the opposition look in that direction. It depends on what flag will be hoisted in Minsk and the respective side will endeavor to profit from the situation.”

The public debate “Autumn of elections: expectations and challenges in European development context” was held as part of the project “Overcoming stereotypes of European integration through communication” that is implemented with support from the Hanns Seidel Foundation.
