Liberals demand Moldova's withdrawal from CIS

The Liberal Party (PL), in a statement published on Friday, calls on Parliament to convene an extraordinary sitting to denounce the Act of Accession to the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) , Info-Prim Neo reports. According to the statement, the military aggression by the Russian Federation against Georgia, the invasion of the Russian troops on the territory of a sovereign state, member of UN and of the CIS, the premeditated destruction of the military, economic and infrastructural capacities of Georgia, the ethical purge and the atrocities perpetrated by the Russian soldiers against the civilian population and recorded on the spot by international humanitarian organizations are acts of extreme gravity, unprecedented in the history of the CIS in the relations between the 12 member states of the Commonwealth. The military aggression planned in advance by Russia, a CIS member state, against another CIS member state, that is, Georgia, with the declared goal of changing the democratically elected leadership of this county and of preventing its possible accession to the NATO creates a radically new situation within the CIS, overthrows the entire system of relations built within the Commonwealth, and, altogether, the rationale for its existence, the statement reads. Taking into account these and other aspects, as well as the fact that the Republic of Moldova is experiencing a host of problems similar to Georgia's – the existence on its territory of the breakaway region of Transnistria, where Russia has created and fostered a ghost-state unrecognized by the international community; the presence of the Russian troops and the military occupation on the left side of the Nistru. Acknowledging the unpredictability of the separatist regime in Tiraspol and the possibility that, being outside of the applicability of the international law, it could, by Russia's order, engage in aggressive acts against the Republic of Moldova; Taking into account the fact that the recent developments within the CIS pose a serious threat to the national security, independence and territorial integrity of Moldova; Bearing in mind that Georgia's Parliament voted for the withdrawal of the country from the CIS and that Ukraine's Supreme Rada has initiated proceedings to denounce the acts of accession to the CIS; - the PL calls for an extraordinary session of the Parliament to urgently denounce the Act of Accession to the CIS signed by Moldova in 1991, as well as the acts that founded the CIS and which Moldova is party to. In addition, the PL calls for the reconsideration of the National Security Law with a view to abandoning the status of constitutional neutrality, and the initiation of procedures for signing an agreement of intensified cooperation with NATO, as a stage of pre-accession to this organization, the only one capable of guaranteeing and safeguarding the national security of the Republic of Moldova before the militaristic and imperialist policy of the Russian Federation in this region, the party stated.
