“Letter for Moldova”: It’s a pity you are forgotten, as the mother who is always away is

On the occasion of the 27th anniversary of the declaration of Moldova’s Independence, IPN News Agency challenged young and older ones to write a letter to the country. Bellow you can see the letter of student Aliona Căldăraru.
---

Hi, Moldova! Today it is your birthday and I would like to devote several thoughts to you. What can I say? I’m an ordinary person of the Roma ethnic group who, as the others, enjoy Moldovan nationality. I would like to thank you, Moldova, for the fact that after 27 years of independence I feel as trapped among false masks and thieves as earlier.

And now, dear homeland, being a student, I’m always discriminated even if I enjoy equal rights. I wonder what the purpose of this holiday is. Doesn’t independence mean liberty, equal rights and freedom of expression? What’s the use of studying today when my future job depends on color?

I know I should thank you today and I will do so. I thank you for my mother whom I see only during the Easter holidays. I thank you for my father who is always anxious as he has six children at home who are waiting hungry for him.

I wonder, Moldova, whether someone really needed to struggle, to die for the nation? Will this nation that is like plague understand the meaning of this bloodshed? I do not want to complain about poverty, hunger or shortages, but it hurts because we forget our language and do not recognize our nation.

It’s scaring as our soul is poor. I’m afraid of these travelers who are called citizens and wait for national conscience to wake up.

Moldova, you are my native country, but you are the only one in the world where I can be called gipsy and, no matter how hard I try not to be banal, I know we will always be ranked last.

It’s a pity, Moldova, because you are forgotten, as the mother who is always away is. I thank you for the fact that my siblings today cannot openly say who they are. We, Moldova, found ourselves to be absent in everything as there is no meaning if there is no justice.

Aliona Căldăraru
