Leader Smirnov vows to allow Moldovan statesmen into Nistru’s East Bank

At the meeting with Tiraspol leader Igor Smirnov, Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin has said he will address the European Union and the United States to cancel the ban on issuing visas “for Transnistria’s leader,” Info-Prim Neo reports. In his turn, Igor Smirnov said on Friday, 11 April, that Transnistria’s leadership annuls the travel restrictions “between the two banks of the Nistru for the representatives of the Moldovan leadership,” reads a communiqué issued by the Chisinau Presidency. Vladimir Voronin and Igor Smirnov have agreed to immediately convene „the working groups to develop measures to strengthen the trust between Chisinau and Tiraspol.” These groups are to come up with projects concerning the development of infrastructure, construction of roads, security and disarmament areas, the social, cultural and humanitarian spheres. “The President of the Republic of Moldova Vladimir Voronin and Transnistria’s Leader Igor Smirnov have agreed to continue such meetings to gradually solve all the problems having gathered between Chisinau and Tiraspol,” the release adds up. Reuters quotes journalists having waited in Bender where the meeting took place as saying, after the meeting which lasted for about 90 minutes, the Moldovan President headed for Chisinau, not making any statements. On Friday afternoon President Voronin has made statements at his quarters in Chisinau, but many reporters have not been allowed in, on reason they were not included on a list. Earlier this week, the presidential press service announced that Vladimir Voronin agreed over the phone with Igor Smirnov to have a reunion. The two have not met for the last seven years.
