Largest donation of Romanian books for 300 libraries

Romania creates cultural bridges through books. Thousands of volumes in Romanian, purchased by the Department for Relations with the Republic of Moldova, were handed over on Thursday, October 10, in Chisinau. More than 100,000 books in physical format, as well as their equivalent in electronic format, are to be donated to public libraries in 200 localities, IPN reports.

Secretary of state of the Department for Relations with the Republic of Moldova of the Government of Romania Adrian Dupu said that this is the largest book donation that Romania made to the Republic of Moldova in the last 34 years. “We are glad that we can support book lovers, readers from all the corners of the country and through this we want to strengthen the special relationship between Romania and the Republic of Moldova. I hope that these books will reach as many children as possible, young and old alike,” said Adrian Dupu.

Elena Pintilei, director general of the National Library of the Republic of Moldova, said that the need for Romanian books is felt in the country’s libraries. “We believe that by implementing this project, we will cover part of the needs of our users, who still step on the threshold of libraries, those who are part of the communities. But we, the librarians, being the ones who manage the library, are part of the community and we are increasingly involved in the needs of the communities in which we work,” stated the library director.

Romania’s Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova Cristian-Leon Țurcanu said that the project matches harmoniously the things that Romania has done for the Republic of Moldova. “The support provided by the Government of Romania can be found in all areas of life, here, in the Republic of Moldova, and it is a natural support, which will continue. It is an aid that essentially represents an investment in the future of the Republic of Moldova,” stated the Romanian diplomat.

Minister of Culture Sergiu Prodan, said that libraries in Moldovan communities play a role that is difficult to overestimate as they represent the heart of communities. And all Romania’s assistance during these years and in the future has only one purpose – to unite communities. “The Ministry of Culture will continue to make every effort so that these books not only pass from hand to hand, but leave a strong impact on the soul of each person,” noted Sergiu Prodan

Moldova’s Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu said that the book donation continues a chain of beautiful events that reaffirm the support of the Romanian state. “We promise to read them all and wait for the next batch!,” he stated.

The National Library of the Republic of Moldova is the institution that will later distribute the volumes in all the 300 public libraries.
