“La Strada” launches campaign to raise awareness of migrant vulnerability

The International Center for Women’s Rights Protection and Promotion “La Strada” today starts a new awareness-raising campaign titled “Vulnerability of Migrants, Especially Women, to Exploitation and Trafficking in Human Beings,” Info-Prim Neo reports. The objectives of the campaign are to sensitize the people and authorities to women’s vulnerability to exploitation and trafficking, to inform the people about economic migrants’ rights and to educate them on safe migration and prevention of trafficking. The organizers also aim to encourage the potential migrants and trafficked persons, their relatives and close friends to call the Center on the free hotline 0 800 77777 to obtain information or benefit from assistance and support. “The trafficking in human beings is further associated with the sexual exploitation of women. Other forms of exploitation are ignored. Consequently, the cases of women labor are not identified. Often, such victims are treated as illegal migrants and are deported. In such a situation the woman becomes more vulnerable to trafficking and far from assistance and protection,” “La Strada” says in a communiqué. The NGO stresses that the women that had been exploited for labor often do not regard themselves as victims of human trafficking and do not ask for assistance and protection. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the International Labor Organization, the number of cases of trafficking for labor exploitation increases yearly. The campaign is conducted by the International Center “La Strada” in partnership with the Government of Moldova. It was organized with financial support from the ICCO, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, the Embassy of Germany in Chisinau, and the IOM Office in Moldova.
