Klaus Iohannis at EPC Summit: EU and other partners are here for Moldova

The citizens of the Republic of Moldova are not alone. The European Union and the other partners are here for Moldova, the President of Romania Klaus Iohannis stated in the opening of the European Political Community Summit. According to him, the strengthening of the Republic of Moldova means strengthening of Europe’s energy resilience, IPN reports.

“We must do so that our support becomes more visible for the citizens in Moldova. They must see concrete improvements in their everyday life. This is essential for the success story of the Republic of Moldova,” stated Klaus Iohannis.

The Romanian official praised the Moldovan authorities for their efforts to cope with two major challenges, namely the reforms needed to integrate into the EU and the countering of hybrid threats that aim to divert Moldova from stability and resilience. “Romania offered solid support to help them cope with these challenges. We shared our experience related to European affairs so that the accession negotiations could start and offered also financial and sector assistance. Moldova supported the platform launched by Romania together with France and Germany and the new sanctions regime with the first list of persons who act against its stability and also the new civil partnership mission. All these are concrete examples of our support,” said Klaus Iohannis.

He noted that the summit should strongly reaffirm the unwavering support for Ukraine and its people in fighting the Russian aggression and rebuilding solid peace based on the principles of the UN Charter. “This should also be a reflection of our common capacity to make progress on the path of peace, stability and democracy in Europe and not only.”

The Romanian official also said that the military aggression against Ukraine is the most distressing evolution in the era after the Cold War. “It is our duty, of the community of European democratic states, to respond to this historic call and to support the most vulnerable of us. These states chose steps on the path of democracy so as to protect their sovereignty and territorial integrity, echoing the values that always formed the basis of our freedom and democracy,” stated Klaus Iohannis.

The opening remarks are followed by discussions behind closed doors, after which roundtable meetings on security, energy and connectivity will take place. Bilateral meetings will be held as well, while the closing press conference will start at 5pm.
