“It is fashionable among politicians to say ‘resignation of honor’. They probably feel better if they say resignation of honor. Resignation is yet resignation,” Romanian MEP Monica Macovei said, noting that compared to the events taking place in Romania, the resignation of Moldovan Premier Chiril Gaburici is indeed of honor.
“In our country, the Prime Minister said he will resign if he is prosecuted. Afterward, he found out at the National Anticorruption Directorate that he is prosecuted, but said that he changed his mind and will not resign. Now he says he will resign when he is convicted by a definitive court decision,” the MEP stated for IPN.
As to the political situation in Moldova, Monica Macovei said she does not understand why the Liberal Party is not in power. “It formed part of the pro-European coalition. It’s hard to believe that the pro-European reforms and the reforms for Moldova’s European course will be done with the support of the Party of Communists. Knowing that Mister Plahotniuc (first deputy chairman of the Democratic Party – e.n.) makes all the arrangements, I doubt that things will go well for those who want the pro-European road to be continued,” she said.
The MEP also said that the politicians come and go and what the people want is more important. “I admire the tens of thousands of people from Moldova who demonstrated against the government. We do not see something like this in Romania. Something like this cannot remain without consequences in Moldova. Pragmatically speaking, one wants people’s votes actually,” stated Monica Macovei.
As to the local elections held in Moldova, she said there are some who do not want the people who think freely and who are disappointed to take part in elections. “They want only the manipulated people to vote. I can refer here directly to Russia, which encourages corruption and the lack of independent justice because it is easier to manipulate and, eventually, to conquer a state affected by corruption,” said Monica Macovei, who heads the European Parliament’s Delegation to the EU – Moldova Parliamentary Cooperation Committee.
The local general elections were held in Moldova on June 14. The second round of mayoral elections in some settlements will take place on June 28.
