Only three of the 14 sarcophagi of the pesticides stockpile in Vulcanesti district, where almost 4,000 tonnes of pesticides are stored, were set up according to requirements. These were covered with polyethylene and built in concrete. The channels for draining meteoric water along the fence of the stockpile are partially destroyed. These are the conclusions reached by specialists as a result of an inspection carried out at the store, IPN reports.
According to a press release of the Ministry of Environment, the ecological inspection was performed by the Gagauzia Ecological Agency in the presence of representatives of the Vulcanesti Division of the National Food Safety Agency in the course of this year. The specialists ascertained that the stockpile’s reservoirs are damaged, while the protection fence needs to be repaired in parts.
To inspect the store, Minister of Environment Valeriu Munteanu ordered creating a working group that will initiate actions to exclude the risks of contaminating the environment components in the area. According to senior consultant of the Ministry Ion Magu, the visit was made to initiate a feasibility study of the stockpile. “We want to attract European funds to transport the pesticides to countries that deal with their destruction like Germany and the Czech Republic,” he stated.
Built in 1977, the pesticides stockpile in Cismichioi village of Vulcanesti district is 2.4 hectares in area. It is located about 10 km from the village and is fenced, while the perimeter of the store is surrounded by trees.
