Investments in renewable energy on the rise

Investments in renewable energy have increased, including thanks to support schemes intended for eligible small producers. According to the authorities, these initiatives contribute to the diversification of energy sources and the reduction of dependence on imports, which are considered important objectives for the state's energy security, IPN reports.

The National Agency for Energy Regulatory pointed out that due to the "fixed charge" support scheme, many investors were motivated to develop photovoltaic power plants. So far, power plants with a capacity of 132.5 MW have been built and put into operation, out of the total allocated 155 MW. The difference of 22.5 MW is to be covered by the end of this year. These installations will generate about 159 million kWh of energy annually, enough to power about 112,000 households.

In addition to solar energy, the Republic of Moldova also invests in wind energy. The Agency confirmed the status of eligible small producer for developers who will build wind power plants with a total capacity of 32 MW. Projects approved in 2020 must be completed by the end of 2025, while those approved in 2024 and 2025 will be put into operation in 2026 and 2027. These plants will produce about 84 million kWh of energy annually, equivalent to the consumption of 59,000 households.

The authorities announced that the maximum capacity ceiling for large wind installations was reached, with the status of eligible small producer being approved for three projects of 4 MW each. However, there is still room for the development of other renewable technologies, such as biogas cogeneration plants and small hydropower plants, where the quotas have not been completely exhausted.

For investors interested in larger projects, the Government is holding tender contests for the status of large eligible producer, offering 60 MW for photovoltaic plants and 105 MW for wind power plants. The aim is to attract additional investments and support the Republic of Moldova's transition to a sustainable energy system.
