Initiative group creates Party for Animal Rights

An initiative group has announced the creation of a new political party in Moldova, which will be called the Party for Animal Rights. The political movement will struggle for the protection of nature and the observance of animal rights in Moldova. Lawyer Ion Dron, a member of the initiative group, in a news conference at IPN said the problem of animal rights is not a headache, as the authorities believe, but is a social problem.

The initiative group adopted also a manifesto saying that the emancipation of slaves and ensuring of gender equality should be followed by the serious treatment of animal rights. According to Ion Dron, the contemporary man distances himself more from nature, creating thus a structural imbalance. The often brutal intervention of humans leads to the irreversible spoiling of the environment by pollution caused by all kinds of human activities. The future generations will face more serious unfavorable consequences.

The lawyer noted it is essential for the humans to impose ecological restrictions by themselves. These should envision the reduced use of space, raw material, energy, plants and animals, which is also defined in the Earth Charter. In this Charter, the protection of viability, diversity and beauty of Earth is presented as a sacred duty of mankind. “Cruelty to animals raised by people should be prevented, while the hunting and fishing methods that cause extreme, prolonged and useless suffering should be banned,” stated Ion Dron.

Speaking about the experimental use of animals for medical purposes, Ion Dron said other alternatives should be identified. “The humans’ respect for animals is inseparable from the mutual respect of people, while the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, together with the Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare and the Earth Charter, is the practical foundation based on which the people, animals and nature should interact,” noted the lawyer.

Mircea Zgherea, a member of the initiative group, said he joined the movement because he cares about what is going on and wants to actively become involved in the solving of problems. Better legislative norms should be promoted to protect the environment and, implicitly, human health.

Initiative group member Eugeniu Savca said a change of mentality concerning nature is necessary in Moldova. The young generation leaves the country not owing to poverty, but because we do not have social comfort here. To ensure social comfort in Moldova, separate culture in relation to animals is needed.

The members of the initiative group noted that Moldova does not have a law that would ban the abandonment of animals and didn’t ratify the European Convention for the Protection of Pet Animals. The ideas stated in the manifesto will be detailed in the program of the Party for Animal Rights.
