Inhabitant of Tiraspol caught with an undeclared sum of US$20,000 on border

The border police documented an attempt to smuggle undeclared sums of US$20,000 and €2,500. The money was found during a security check of hand luggage at the Chisinau International Airport. The money belonged to a 37-year-old inhabitant of Tiraspol, who intended to leave for the Russian Federation, IPN reports.

Under the legislation, a sum totaling at most €10,000 in different currencies can be taken in or out of the country. It is mandatory to declare the sums that exceed this amount when entering the county and the sum of €10,000 to €50,000 when leaving the country. In the last case, confirmatory documents for the amount that exceeds €10,000 need to be presented to the customs bodies. These can be permits issued by licensed banks and/or authorizations issued by the National Bank of Moldova.

The undeclared sums can be confiscated and a criminal case can be started, depending on the value of the smuggled sum.
