On August 8 it is four years of the formation of the Alliance for European Integration (AEI), which is the main coalition body created by the democratic parties after winning the April 2009 elections. In this period, a stable step was taken towards the European integration, but the expectations were greater. The living standards have improved, but the authorities don’t do everything possible to boost the economy. Such assessments were made by a group of experts who were invited to a program of Publika TV channel, IPN reports.
Political analyst Viorel Cibotaru considers that the AEI focused on the improvement of Moldova’s foreign relations. There appeared communication and support on the part of the neighboring and European countries. Compared with the model of Communist government, which, according to the analyst, took one step forward and three steps backward, the alliance in these four years continued to make progress with some of the reforms. The country’s legislation became Euro-compliant, but work is yet to be done to ensure the implementation of the laws. “The economic reforms failed. The expectations are much greater,” said Viorel Cibotaru.
According to historian and university lecturer Leonid Tabara, of all the set objectives the AEI managed only to improve the freedom of speech and the freedom of the media. “There is no local autonomy in Moldova, as under the Communist rule,” he stated. “They go to Europe, but this does not mean that the people want this, especially after immoral values are imposed on them.”
Expert Corneliu Ciurea considers that the expectations were great, but the country continued to make progress. “We must not give very low grades to the power as they cannot work miracles. They will have to sustain the verdict of the elections,” he stated, adding that the current government coalition is a continuation of the alliance formed four years ago. “They are the same people and the same main players who have the same views.”
The Alliance for European Integration was formed on August 8, 2009, after the July 29 early elections. As a result of the elections, four parties of the five that entered Parliament formed an alliance and the Communists had to move to the opposition after being for eight years in power. After 2009, there were constituted three pro-European ruling alliances: AEI, AEI2 and the Pro-European Government Coalition.
