Import of Moldovan plums into Canada discussed during visit to Ottawa

The procedures needed to start the phytosanitary inspection for authorizing the import of Moldovan plums into Canada were discussed in a meeting of deputy minister of agriculture and food industry Vlad Loghin and head of the Plant Biosecurity and Forestry Division Gregory Wolff at the head office of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) in Ottawa. The Moldovan official is in Canada on a working visit, IPN reports.

In a communique, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry says the officials welcomed the establishment of a direct dialogue between the National Food Safety Agency of Moldova and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. The Canadian Agency’s representative confirmed their readiness to launch the phytosanitary examination process and encouraged the Moldovan side to hasten the collection and sending of the information required earlier by the CFIA to the Canadian partners.

There were also discussed the stages that must be covered before delivering the first consignment of Moldovan plums to Canada. Among other subjects discussed were the appropriate mechanisms of cooperation between the two agencies, which would allow better knowing the requirements for fresh fruit and vegetables on the Canadian market, and the establishment of a mechanism for exchanging experience between specialists in the field.

The import of Moldovan wine into Canada was discussed with representatives of the state-owned Alcohol Society of Quebec (SAQ), based in Montreal. This is the fifth largest company in the world by the volume of beverages it imports. The wines represent about 80% of the drinks imported by the SAQ. Over the last few years, the Canadian consumers have showed increased interest in a more diverse range of products.

The SAQ representatives told the Moldovan delegation that three Moldovan wine brands successfully passed the first selection stage and will be subject to an organoleptic examination when all the formalities are performed. Afterward, the first batch of Moldovan wines could be exported to Quebec.
