Thanks to the new ILS CAT III instrument landing system, on the very first day of its operation, six aircraft successfully landed at the Chisinau International Airport in dense fog conditions, IPN reports.
"Modern technology ensured that flights are conducted without significant delays or redirections so that our passengers have a smooth journey and airlines can keep to their flight schedules," reads a press release.
According to the Airport’s administration, only one aircraft was rerouted, according to the commander's decision, and the plane landed at the reserve airport. However, without this system, all flights would have been redirected to other airports.
The system provides pilots with accurate information about direction and altitude during landing, even when visibility is close to zero. The ILS CAT III category allows landings in conditions of vertical visibility below 30 meters to zero and horizontal visibility below 300 meters to a minimum of 75 meters.
