The Republic of Moldova and Ukraine discussed the problem of the low level of water in the Nistru River and possible solutions to it. As a result of the discussions, the Ukrainian side promised that a larger volume of water will be discharged into the Nistru the coming days, head of the “Eco-TIRAS” International Environmental Association of River Keepers Ilia Trombitski told a news conference, IPN reports.
According to him, it was ascertained that the reservoir in Ukraine’s Novodnetrovsk does not contain a low amount of water as it was asserted. Next week the discussions will continue at international level. A meeting between representatives of the Moldovan and Ukrainian sides will take place in Kiev.
Ilia Trombitski said that it’s not yet clear why such a large volume of water was kept in the reservoir in Novodnetrovsk. It is presumed that this was done for energy-related purposes.
The ecologist also said that the discharge of a larger volume of water in the Nistru is now a solution for Moldova. But considerable precipitation is needed in the country for the problem to be solved. “The purpose of the territory between the Nistru and Prut must be reviewed, but political will is needed for this too,” he stated, adding that the river is drying up also because of climate change.
The subject was brought into focus by Communist MPs, who warned about a possible ecological catastrophe and a halt in the supply of water to Chisinau. Afterward, SA “Apa-Canal Chisinau” said that now the water in the Nistru measures 8.5 meters and if the level decreases below 8.4 meters, the pumping station on the Nistru that supplies water to Chisinau could stop work. Minister of Environment Valeriu Munteanu said there are yet no reasons for concern.
