Supreme Court of Justice today rejected the appeal filed by the lawyers of Ilan Sor, sentenced by the Chisinau Court of Appeal to 15 years in prison. Thus, the SCJ upholds the decision of the Chisinau Court of Appeal of April 13, 2023, IPN reports.
"All the essential arguments raised by the defense, i.e. those that could have influenced the resolution of the case, were found to be unfounded or inadmissible on procedural grounds. The other arguments, including those on the inadmissibility of evidence, are manifestly unfounded or have been sufficiently combated by the appellate court and do not need to be combated in detail in the judgment", the SCJ decision reads.
In June 2017, Ilan Sor was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for causing damage to the state by deceit and breach of trust. In a judgment of the Chisinau Court of Appeal of April 13, 2023, Ilan Sor was sentenced to 15 years in prison. The appeals court deprived Mr. Sor of the right to hold positions in the banking system for a term of five years and ordered the forfeiture of 5.2 billion lei.
Ilan Sor had left the Republic of Moldova pending sentencing and extradition requests have so far remained unanswered.
