Igor Sharov confirmed as rector of USM, says what his priorities are

Former minister of education, culture and research Igor Sharov was confirmed as rector of the State University of Moldova. Contacted by IPN for a comment, the reactor said that in the current pandemic situation, the health of teachers and students is the top priority.

Igor Sharov noted that he presented his priorities in the program with which he won the contest to fill the post of rector of the USM. “They are related to the problems existing in society – infrastructure, digitization process, internationalization of programs of study. We must do so that higher education becomes more attractive to students,” he stated.

“We should also speak about the higher education reform as we have many universities, but few students. The reform initiated last year, which has a number of components, should be continued. It will definitely be beneficial to all the involved players.”

Ex-minister of education, culture and research Igor Sharov was elected rector of the State University of Moldova (USM) on February 17. He is a doctor of history. In 2013-2017, he served as deputy minister of culture, while in 2017-2019 he held the post of state secretary general at the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research. In 1995-2013, he was pro-dean and then dean of the State University of Moldova. On March 17, 2020, he was named minister of education, culture and research after the Democratic Party and the Party of Socialists signed a government agreement. On November 9, Igor Sharov and another three ministers of the PDM were dismissed following the party’s decision to withdraw form government.
