President Igor Dodon will request the European partners to press the ruling coalition into accepting the mixed-member electoral system, but could also resort to harsher actions, such as boycotting of elections and mass protests. The issue was developed by the Head of State in the program “Moldova live” on the public TV channel Moldova 1, IPN reports.
“My adviser Maxim Lebedinski goes to Strasbourg tomorrow, while Andrei Neguta will join him in several days. With the assistance of the foreign partners, we will exert pressure on the PDM so that this votes for the mixed electoral system,” stated President Dodon.
He also said that his proposal envisions that half of the MPs will be chosen based on party lists and the other half by the uninominal voting system. “I suggest that the diaspora and Transnistria should be offered the possibility of choosing half of the MPs elected based on uninominal voting. The other half should be chosen by regions, especially those populated by ethnic minorities. For example, Gagauzia will be able to have two-three representatives in Parliament,” noted Igor Dodon.
According to him, the current voting system will be history. “In several weeks, it will be clear what electoral system will be used in the 2018 elections. It will be either our system or the system proposed by the PDM. The current system will definitely not be kept,” said the Head of State.
Igor Dodon stated it was his duty to suggest a compromise solution. “Given the current situation, I, as President, had to come up with a proposal to ensure balance. I discussed the created situation with the European partners and they told me to find a compromise solution. The mixed electoral system proved its efficiency in many states and this will enable many political parties to continue their existence,” he said.
Earlier this week, President Igor Dodon suggested introducing the mixed-member electoral system in Moldova. Previously, the Democratic Party (PDM) proposed replacing the current party-list proportional representation system with the uninominal voting system.
