If the unionist movement continues to develop, this will be a threat not only to Moldova’s security, but also to the security of the whole region and the European continent, President Igor Dodon stated in the talk show “Key issue” on NTV Moldova channel, IPN reports.
The President said he transmitted relevant signals to the UN, the European Commission and the OSCE. “We are very concerned about the fact that the international community does not react to this. I think it would have been correct to react as it is direct aggression against a neighboring state,” noted Igor Dodon.
He said the solemn statement on the celebration of the union adopted by the Parliament of Romania is a direct attack on Moldova’s statehood. “When this thing is done by an NGO or a political party from Romania, which makes union statements for electoral purposes, is one thing, but when this is done by a state body – the Parliament – it is something else. We should say it clearly that Romania’s Parliament openly declared that it pleads for the liquidation of the Republic of Moldova,” stated President Dodon, adding the fact that the administration of Moldova’s Parliament took part in this event is inacceptable.
Igor Dodon said the relations between Moldova and Russia during the past year have become tenser. The tensions between the West and Russia entered an acute phase during the past two months and this is very dangerous. “I think it is evident that there is an interest in having one more hotbed here. We, the Moldovans, definitely do not need this,” stated the President, noting that even the slowest destabilization of the situation in Moldova related to the unionists or the Transnistrian region could lead to war.
As to the new local elections in Chisinau municipality, President Dodon said he will support the Socialists’ candidate Ion Ceban in the election campaign. For the first time there is a chance for the residents of Chisinau to choose a person who is not preoccupied with geopolitics. The Socialists can win the mayoralty in the first round of voting.
