Igor Boțan: Society must understand that artificially constructed myths crumble

The efforts to revive the Soviet Empire are the biggest danger now looming over regional security, expert Igor Boţan stated in a public debate hosted by IPN News Agency. According to him, artificially created myths crumble and the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 is an eloquent example of this.

Igor Boţan said that Soviet propaganda always tried to delimit the Great Patriotic War from World War II, as
the USSR wanted to monopolize victory against Nazi Germany and minimize the contributions of the Western allies (the U.S., Great Britain).

"Historians say that taking the period of the Great Patriotic War out of the context of World War II is a ploy. World War II historiography says that it began in September 1939, after Germany and the USSR attacked Poland under the Ribbentrop-Molotov pact. Historians draw attention to how Soviet propaganda reflected the beginning of World War II. Initially, Soviet propaganda blamed Poland for the start of World War II. A year later, in 1940, Soviet propaganda and Stalin blamed France and Great Britain for the start of World War II. And in 1941, on May 5, Stalin said that Germany was to blame for the start of the war and that there will be no peace in Europe without a big war," said the project's permanent expert.

He noted that Russian leader Vladimir Putin's efforts to revive the Soviet Empire are the greatest danger to regional security. By starting the war in Ukraine,
Russia is trying to regain the geopolitical influence lost after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

"Society must understand that artificial myths crumble. What created Vladimir Lenin – the Soviet Union - fell apart in 1991. The efforts to revive this Empire represent the main danger. What we are seeing now in Ukraine is a consequence of the efforts of those who wanted to reanimate not so much the Soviet Empire, but the Russian Empire. There are theses of Russian experts, close to Putin, who say that Russia can only exist as an Empire. They speak of "Putin's eternal state" as the fourth link in Russia's imperial chain, starting with Ivan III, the Romanov dynasty, the USSR and now "Putin's eternal state” is the fourth imperial link,” said Igor Boţan.

The public debate entitled "
Three fundamental myths sustaining the USSR" is part of the cycle of debates "Developing Political Culture Through Public debates". IPN Agency carries out the project with support from the German Hanns Seidel Foundation.
