What happened in 1918, namely the Union of Bessarabia with Romania, was an absolutely natural process. Under these circumstances, but also taking into account the developments on the European continent, the treaties to which the Republic of Moldova and Romania are parties, this process can be continued until the Republic of Moldova becomes a member of the EU and there Romania and the Republic of Moldova will freely decide, as provided by the Constitution of the two states, how this community willingly decides its fate, the permanent expert of IPN’s project Igor Boțan stated in a public debate entitled “Consequences of the Union and of the “Reunion-Vossoedinenie”. Comparative analysis”.
The expert noted that since 1991, efforts have been made to return to normality. The road is hard, while society is divided. If there is the same ethnic, religious identity, now that there is freedom of choice, it is necessary to understand that it is natural for Moldova and Romania to strive to be together.
According to Igor Boțan, there is still the Moldovenist current that tries to prove that society here is rather part of the Russian world. Respectively, they come with the already known arguments. The church is important in this situation because older generations are those who go to church more often and it can be seen that things are going in a certain direction there too. An example is the letter of Metropolitan Bishop Vladimir to the Patriarch of Russia, where he admits that the Moldovans are actually Romanians and that over the centuries the population here hasn’t been subjected to fair treatment.
The expert noted that the process of regaining identity still continues because there are external factors of regional integration which are very strong and are stronger than internal factors
Igor Boțan argued that the Union of Bessarabia with Romania in 1918 was such a natural process that only additional evidence can be produced to confirm this. For example, after the Bolshevik putsch in Russia, which put the church under enormous pressure, the events developed in such a way that they naturally led to the fact that the population here was saved from separation from the church.
In Soviet Russia there were conducted all kinds of experiments. For example, the transition of the Russian language to the Latin alphabet was planned so that the Latin alphabet could later be used as a tool for the world revolution. There were also experiments aimed at denationalizing all conquered peoples, which largely succeeded. The goal of the Soviets was to form through universities the so-called scientific technical intelligentsia, without national identity, which would contribute to the achievement of the regime’s objectives, including building equipped armed forces, factories, factories, etc., concluded the expert.
