The politicians should come with sincere and trenchant messages, expert of IPN’s project Igor Boțan stated in the public debate “Dissolution of Parliament and snap elections. Experts “translate” actions and statements of politicians to make them clear to the general public” that was staged by IPN News Agency.
According to the expert, the politicians’ game in the context of the snap parliamentary elections is legitimate and was announced very clearly. “Maia Sandu, who was recently elected President, in her inaugural speech told us very clearly that snap elections are needed. We thank her a lot for sincerity. The constitutional norm is applied further. The constitutional norm says it clearly, in Article 85, that 90 days is available to overcome the political crisis. This is a reasonable timeframe, from December 23 until March 23,” said Igor Boțan, noting a period of 45 days until dissolution starts when the candidate for Prime Minister is proposed the first time.
The expert considers that the politicians’ sincerity as to their wish to have snap elections can be tested by discussions within the parliamentary groups. The PAS, the PPPDA and those who are In favor of the swift dissolution of Parliament should discuss with the Socialists and explain to them why it is important to have elections now. First of all, Igor Dodon should quicker occupy a public post as his state as a political leader is not the wanted one outside a public post. It is not convenient for the PSRM to have elections in autumn, not in spring, as the composition of the Central Election Commission is to be changed in summer and the pro-European opposition will probably have advantages here.
“In the current crisis situation, moments of uncertainty can appear in the Party of Socialists. The PAS could tell the Socialists: “You want to bring the Republic of Moldova into the Eurasian Union, but look what scandal appeared now in the Russian Federation around upper level corruption. Do you really think that this will not have a further impact during half a year?” There are a series of factors showing that those from the PAS, if they are active, can persuade the Socialists that the best solution is to swiftly induce snap parliamentary elections and restore the normal pace of things,” stated Igor Boțan.
The public debate “Dissolution of Parliament and snap elections. Experts “translate” actions and statements of politicians to make them clear to the general public” is the 168th of the series “Developing political culture through public debates” that is supported by the Hanns Seidel Foundation.
