Igor Botan: Political crisis was preceded by moral one

The current political crisis was preceded by a moral one, but the politicians in the future should avoid being caught in moral crises that they cannot overcome, political analyst Igor Botan said in the public debate “Culture of the political crisis: realities, necessities and norms”, staged by IPN News Agency.

A permanent expert to the debates, Igor Botan said the political crises became something ordinary for the Moldovans. “When we have different political players, frictions appear between them. If they are unable to deal with them, these frictions turn into tensions and then into conflicts. The crisis arises when the conflicts cannot be settled. We now reached a bifurcation point and cannot go back. The crisis requires new approaches. We are facing a political crisis caused by the political class,” stated Igor Botan.

He said that frictions between the Liberal Democratic Party, the Liberal Party and the Democratic Party existed when the agreement on the formation of the ruling alliance was negotiated. “There were tensions as well as interests. The moral crisis appeared after the hunting incident in the Domneasca Forest became known. It was followed by the political crisis. The people were shocked to find out that the authorities take part in such practices and the case was hidden. The PLDM decided to gain dividends, but failed,” said the expert.

According to Igor Botan, Vlad Filat, who denounced the alliance constitution agreement, at a certain moment said he was ready to take two steps backward. “I think the recordings of tapped phone conversations appeared not accidentally. A moral counter-crisis was created. Filat wasn’t allowed to take two steps backward. He was pushed forward. The PL and PDM want to re-form the alliance, but without Filat. They cannot overcome the moral crisis and I do not see how they can,” stated the analyst.

As to the solving of the current political crisis, Igor Botan said there are two ways out of the situation. The first is to come to terms. If the politicians are afraid of early legislative elections, they should restore the alliance, but it will not be credible. The second is to organize early elections if they are not afraid of them and the people will then forgive their sins.

“Culture of the political crisis: realities, necessities and norms” is the 13th episode of the public debates organized by IPN within the project “Development of political culture by public debates”, which is supported by Hanns Seidel Foundation.
