Hungarian Ambassador thinks Moldova shouldn't hurry to sign free trade agreement with EU
The Republic of Moldova should not hurry to sign a free trade agreement with the EU, because, while being inadequately prepared, this could rather produce disadvantages, stated Hungarian Ambassador to Moldova György Varga at a press conference on Friday, Info-Prim Neo reports.
According to the diplomat, Moldova is not yet prepared to completely liberalize its market, as the purchasing power is low and the Moldovan producers are not ready to face the competition. There are many nuances and the Government should think carefully where to liberalize the market and where not. The ambassador mentioned that Hungary, for example, didn't permit foreign entities to buy land. “You shouldn't hurry to yield in every area only to sign this agreement”, stated György Varga.
The Hungarian diplomat communicated that his country is waiting for the EU's authorization to start negotiations with Moldova on a free trade agreement. According to him, this authorization should be given soon, and the negotiation of the agreement represents one of the priorities of Hungary's EU presidency.
Talking about the Action Plan on the liberalization of the visa regime, the Hungarian ambassador welcomed the Moldovan Government's ambition to achieve it in the shortest time possible, but said that there is still much work to do, including the introduction of biometric passports, improving border security, introduction of specific legislation.
